Climbers on the High Rock walls

Things to Do in Powai and Mumbai: 15 Ideas for Your Next Free Day

Got a free day in Mumbai and no plan? This list starts close to home in Powai, then heads out across the city. Some ideas are active, some are slow, and a few work even when it’s pouring.

Things to do in Powai

1. Try rock climbing at High Rock

Yes, we’re starting with ourselves. High Rock Climbing Arena in Hiranandani Gardens is Mumbai’s largest sport climbing arena, with semi-indoor walls up to 33 ft. You climb on a rope with a harness, every first-timer gets a 15-minute safety briefing, and shoes and harness are included. Anyone aged 6 and above can climb, and you don’t need any experience. A 2-hour session is ₹1,790, and you can book a slot online.

2. Walk along Powai Lake

Powai Lake is one of the city’s best spots for an evening walk, with wide views of water and hills. Go around sunset. The lake is home to mugger crocodiles, so enjoy it from the promenade.

3. Eat your way around Hiranandani Gardens

The streets around Hiranandani Gardens are packed with cafés, bakeries and restaurants, from quick coffee to long dinners. It’s an easy place to spend an afternoon on foot.

4. Shop or catch a film nearby

R City Mall in Ghatkopar and Phoenix Marketcity in Kurla are both a short drive from Powai, with shopping, food courts and cinemas under one roof.

5. Plan a kids’ party or class that isn’t the usual

If you’re a Powai parent, climbing is a good break from play zones and screens. High Rock hosts birthday parties for up to 40 kids and runs Climbing 101, a coached class for children aged 6 and up.

Start at the Gateway, then wander through Colaba’s lanes and the shops along Colaba Causeway.

9. Watch the sunset on Marine Drive

The long curve of Marine Drive is called the Queen’s Necklace because of how its streetlights glow at night. Sit on the sea wall and watch the sky change.

10. Spend a morning in Kala Ghoda

This art district has galleries, cafés and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, one of the city’s big museums. The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival takes over the area every year.

11. Look up at CSMT

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a working railway station and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Victorian Gothic building is worth seeing even if you aren’t catching a train.
