Climbers on the High Rock wall in Powai

Adventure Activities in and Around Mumbai: Where to Start

Mumbai sits next to the Sahyadri hills and the sea, so there’s plenty of adventure close by. The hard part is knowing where to start, especially if you’ve never done anything “adventurous” before.

Start inside the city: rock climbing

If you want a first taste of adventure without a long drive, start on a climbing wall. At High Rock in Powai you climb walls up to 33 ft on a rope with a harness. If you slip or let go, the rope holds you. Every first-timer gets a 15-minute safety briefing, and the easy yellow and green routes are built for beginners.

It’s also the best training for everything else on this list. Climbing builds grip, balance, leg strength and a calm head at height.

Then head out of the city

Trekking in the Sahyadris

The hills around Mumbai are full of forts and trails, and they’re at their greenest in and after the monsoon. Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra, is a favourite goal. Go with an experienced group if you’re new.

River rafting

The Kundalika river near Kolad is a well-known rafting spot for first-timers. Check the season and go with a licensed operator.

Paragliding

Kamshet, near Lonavala, is the classic place around Mumbai to try a tandem flight with a trained pilot.

Outdoor rock climbing

Once you’ve climbed indoors, real rock is the next step. Our climbing retreat to Badami is a 4-night, 5-day trip. The next one starts on 25 Nov 2026.

How to choose

  • Short on time? Climbing in Powai is a 2-hour session, open every day.
  • Want a weekend away? A trek or a rafting trip.
  • Nervous about heights? Start indoors on a rope, where you choose how high to go.

Ready for your first one? Book a session at High Rock. It’s ₹1,790 for 2 hours, with shoes and harness included.
