Sports You Can Start as an Adult in Mumbai (No Experience Needed)

Plenty of us stopped playing sport after school. The good news is that it’s never too late to start, and Mumbai has options for complete beginners.

What makes a sport easy to start?

  • You can try it once without signing up for months
  • Gear is provided, or cheap to rent
  • There’s a beginner level, so you’re not thrown in with experts
  • It fits around work: early mornings, evenings or weekends

Sport climbing

Climbing is now an Olympic sport, and it’s one of the easiest to start as an adult. At High Rock in Powai you need no experience: shoes and harness are included, every first-timer gets a 15-minute briefing, and the yellow and green routes are made for beginners. It’s more about legs, balance and technique than arm strength. Our oldest climbers are in their 70s.

It’s also social. People climb in pairs, cheer each other on and swap tips about routes. If you’d rather climb alone, our 3 auto-belays let you climb without a partner.

Other sports worth trying

Swimming

Easy on the joints and good all year. Many clubs and housing societies run adult classes.

Running

All you need is shoes. Mumbai’s running groups meet early on weekend mornings, and the city’s marathon season gives you a goal.

Badminton and other racquet sports

Quick to learn and easy to play after work, with courts in most neighbourhoods.

How to stick with it

  • Book the same day and time every week
  • Bring a friend, or join a group
  • Track small wins: in climbing, that might be your first green route, then your first blue
  • Buy a pack, not a single class. At High Rock, a 10-session pass is ₹9,950 and is valid for 6 months
